KS1 Phonics/Reading

Phonics is one of the ways children are taught to read.

Phonics is the knowledge of letters and the sounds they make. At Whitgreave Infants School, we use the Letters and Sounds programme to teach phonics.

The children are taught the skills of blending sounds together to read words and segmenting the sounds in a word and choosing the correct letters needed to spell it and write it.

All children work on the Letters and Sounds Programme from phases 1-6 and are taught in small groups, according to the phase of Letters and Sounds they are working on.

They receive 20-30 minutes separate phonics teaching each day and practise applying their knowledge in reading and writing throughout the day.

Guided Reading/Reading Activities – Children in Years 1 and 2 have Guided Reading/Reading Activities each day. Some children will work with an adult while some children will be working independently on activities to develop reading skills.

Books coming home – Every child will bring a book that is specifically at their reading level and also a book of their choice to share with you. If you possibly can, please spend time sharing these books as this will really support your child’s reading. Every child will also bring home a word book containing age appropriate words that they need to learn to read and write.

Reading Challenge- This takes place annually in the spring/Summer term and is based on a particular theme each year.

Please encourage your child to look after these books and return them to school every day. Thank you for your support!

We run Phonics and SPAG workshops for parents every year. Watch out for the dates for your child’s year group. Please come in to see your child’s teacher if you need any advice at all about supporting Learning at home.
